The 22-year-old has previously featured 12 times for Ireland’s under-21s, playing as a defensive midfielder and at centre-back. Despite being called up last June, a back injury halted his first season at Stoke City, where he made just six appearances following his move from Celtic on a four-year contract.

Lawal began his football journey in Dublin, coming through the ranks at St Kevin’s Boys and Bohemians, before moving to Watford in 2019. Since joining Stoke, he has been establishing himself in the Championship side, earning praise for his versatility and composure in midfield and defence.

Reflecting on the call-up, Lawal said: “It’s an honour to be named in the senior squad again. I’ve worked hard over the past year, and I’m excited for the opportunity to represent my country. I hope to make an impact if called upon against Luxembourg.”

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson had considered recalling Lawal earlier in the season, and the midfielder’s return to fitness and consistent performances at club level have now earned him a spot in the squad.

This season, Lawal has become a key figure for Stoke City, who currently sit fifth in the Championship table. He scored his first goal for the club in August, a spectacular strike that showcased his power and technical ability and has helped contribute to the team’s strong start to the season.

With a potential senior debut on the horizon, Lawal’s international career is set to take a significant step forward, adding to the experience he gained with the under-21 side and continuing his progression in professional football with Stoke.
